Cities Proclaim Virtues of Credit Unions Serving Texans
2012 APR 20 - (VerticalNews.com) -- El Paso Mayor John Cook is the latest city official to sign an "International Year of Cooperatives" proclamation, signifying the critical role that the nine Texas credit unions that make up the El Paso Chapter of Credit Unions play in the community. Credit union representatives were on hand for the March 27th signing.
"Credit unions are among the most recognizable and widely embraced cooperative businesses in Texas," says Texas Credit Union League (League) president and CEO Dick Ensweiler. "It is encouraging to see communities across the state supporting the 'people helping people' philosophy of credit unions."
Among the benefits offered by credit unions, the cities' proclamations highlight job creation, sustainment of communities, economic reinforcement and their willingness to serve people from all income levels. With the theme of "Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World," Mayors in the cities of Corpus Christi, Del Rio, Fort Worth, Galveston, Houston, Kingsville, Tyler and others have also signed proclamations that stress the valuable opportunities that credit unions provide for local economic development and people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ensweiler says the proclamations, as well as a new Facebook game application that the League was able to develop thanks to a grant from the Texas Credit Union Foundation (Foundation) are helping to increase awareness and understanding of credit unions.
Wally Wallet, Ensweiler explains, is an entertaining game that takes players through many levels of play, offering interesting factoids about credit unions after each level is mastered. In addition to offering factoids about credit unions, players can also test their financial savvy, as the game features a financial education quiz.
The game is currently available on the League's and Foundation's Facebook pages.
Foundation executive director Courtney Moran says, "The more people we can attract to the game, the more people we are able to empower with financial knowledge, and educate about credit unions."
